Why do you replace the shutoff valve on a simple faucet swap?
Because old multi-turn stops seize, and the moment you finally turn one it often won't seal again. That turns a quick swap into water on the floor and an emergency. I test every shutoff before starting; if it's stiff or weeping, replacing it with a quarter-turn valve costs very little now and saves the flood version later. If yours is fine, I leave it alone.
Can you install a ceiling fan where there's only a light?
Yes. If there's already a box and a switch, the main thing is making sure the box is fan-rated — a standard light box isn't built for a fan's weight and constant vibration, and fans do come down from unrated boxes. Replacing it with a fan-rated brace box is part of doing the job right. If there's no box or no switch leg at all, I run that too; it makes the job bigger, not impossible.
Do I need a separate plumber or electrician for any of this?
No — that's the point of calling me. Fixture swaps, new lines, new circuits, and the fixture that's never existed before are all one visit with one person. I'm a licensed contractor, I'll tell you honestly what your job involves before any money changes hands, and if anything needs a permit I'll say so up front rather than after the wall is open.
Should I buy the fixture or should you?
Whichever you prefer. Plenty of people pick their own — it's your house and your taste. If you'd rather I handle it, I pick it up and pass through what I paid. I don't mark up materials, and I don't charge for drive time.
