My disposal just hums when I turn it on. Is it dead?
Probably not — a hum means the motor has power but something's stopping the flywheel, which is a jam nine times out of ten. Cut the power, and it can often be freed from underneath with a hex wrench in the socket at the bottom. If you'd rather not go spelunking under the sink, it's a quick visit for me, and I'll fish out whatever caused it so it doesn't repeat next week.
How long should a garbage disposal last?
Eight to fifteen years is typical, with usage and water hardness setting the pace — and Denver's mineral-heavy water isn't kind to the seals. The tell that one's finishing up: needing the reset button more and more often, persistent odors that cleaning doesn't fix, slower grinding, or moisture at the bottom seam. That last one is the definitive sign; bottom-seam leaks don't repair.
Can you add a disposal to a sink that's never had one?
Yes — that's a genuinely nice upgrade and a slightly bigger job than a swap. It needs power under the sink and a switch, plus the drain reworked to the disposal's geometry. As a licensed contractor I do the electrical and the plumbing as one job, which is exactly the kind of two-trade errand that's annoying to arrange any other way.
Will a new disposal fit my existing sink and plumbing?
Nearly always, though the mounting collar differs between brands and a deeper unit can crowd the trap under a shallow sink. I check clearance before fitting rather than after. If your dishwasher drains into the disposal, I'll make sure the knockout plug is removed — a forgotten plug is the single most common reason a new install backs up.
