You have three honest options: reinstall the old base if it survived removal well, add shoe molding to cover the new gap, or take the opportunity for new taller base — which is my usual recommendation, since removal rarely leaves old MDF trim reusable and new base is the finishing move that makes new floors read finished. Usually — mid-century metro profiles are common enough that suppliers still run many of them, and close-but-not-exact profiles can be blended with placement so the difference lives where nobody looks. Truly extinct profiles can be custom-milled for rooms that justify it. For one damaged length, matching wins; when half the room needs help, the replace-the-room conversation is often better money.

Denver's furnace-season dryness — wood and MDF shrink as the house dries out, and joints that were only nailed pull apart at the miters. Trim that goes in acclimated, glued at the joints, and coped rather than mitered on inside corners rides the seasonal swing without opening. Re-tightening and re-caulking existing trim is quick work; doing it right the first time is quicker still.

Both, and it's cheaper to have me do both. Trim painted after installation means one set of caulk lines and no touch-up seams. If you'd rather paint it yourself, I'll install it primed and leave the nail holes filled and sanded so you're picking up a brush, not a putty knife.
