Real walls are the whole game. Corners run fat and shy of square, floors wave, and drywall bellies between studs — which is why good trim work is coping, scribing, and reading the room rather than trusting a miter saw's detents. Inside corners get coped so seasonal movement can't open them; long runs get scribed to the floor's actual shape; and where walls dip, the trim bends to follow or the gap gets handled deliberately. That's the difference between trim that looks grown-in and trim that looks applied.

Colorado's dryness has opinions about trim. Wood and MDF both move with our winter-furnace humidity swing, and trim installed straight off the truck opens its joints by February — material acclimates in the house before it goes up, joints get glued as well as nailed, and caulk does its job at the wall line, not as a structural material. Crown is where this pays most: ceiling lines in older metro houses wander, and crown hung to a chalk line with the wander split invisibly is what makes the room read straight.

Matching versus replacing is an honest fork. Historic profiles in older houses can usually be matched — milled where needed, or hunted down from suppliers who still run them — and patching a room's existing trim is routine. But whole-room replacement is often the better spend once flooring changes height or more than a few lengths are damaged: modern taller baseboard transforms a room and sidesteps the match entirely.
