Cabinet Installation & Repair in Lakewood, CO

Cabinets are the furniture that's attached to the house, and they fail in furniture ways — sagging doors, drawers that fall off their rails, a hinge screw spinning in stripped wood. Almost all of it is repairable for a fraction of replacement, and when replacement is the plan, the install is where boxes become built-ins.

The approach

How I handle cabinet installation & repair.

Repair is the underrated half of cabinet work. Boxes from the 1980s onward are usually plywood or decent particleboard and structurally sound — it's the moving parts that wear out. Doors sag because hinge screws stripped their holes; the fix is repairing the hole with hardwood and glue, not a longer screw into mush. Old hinges give way to soft-close conversions; collapsed drawer bottoms get re-supported; rollers that dump the silverware drawer on the floor get replaced with full-extension slides that feel like a new kitchen. A day of this work rejuvenates a kitchen for hardware money.

Installation is a leveling exercise wearing a carpentry hat. Runs get set to the high point of the floor, shimmed dead level — appliances, counters, and your eye all depend on it — fastened through the backs into studs, and scribed to walls that bow and corners that aren't square. Fillers, panels, and crown finish stock boxes into something that reads built-in. Uppers carry real weight, so finding studs and hitting them isn't optional; a cabinet full of dishes tests every screw eventually.

Hardware deserves its jig. A kitchen's worth of pulls drilled by eye ends up with the one crooked handle you'll see every morning forever — a drilling jig makes every pull identical, level, and centered, and it's how forty holes get drilled in confidence rather than dread. This page also covers the small cabinet cousins: medicine cabinets swapped or recessed, vanity cabinets installed with the plumbing reconnected — my plumbing pages and this one are the same person — and laundry and garage uppers hung where storage is losing to gravity.
