How do I know if my fan vents outside or into the attic?
From the attic, follow the duct — it should reach a roof or wall cap, not end in the insulation or aim at a gable vent. From outside, look for the termination flap moving when the fan runs. If you find a duct dumping into the attic, treat it as a real problem worth fixing this season: that moisture is condensing on your roof framing all winter. Rerouting it is standard work here.
Can you add a fan to a bathroom that only has a window?
Yes — window-as-ventilation was the old standard and nobody opens one in January. A first-time install means cutting the ceiling opening, running power, routing duct to an exterior termination, and wiring a switch or humidity control. It's a few trades' worth of small steps, which is exactly the shape of job a licensed contractor does in one visit.
How loud is a new bathroom fan, and can you fit a quiet one?
Much quieter than what you have, almost certainly. Fans are rated in sones and anything at or under 1.0 is genuinely quiet — the roaring in older bathrooms is usually a cheap builder fan plus undersized duct. I'll size it to the room and duct it properly, because a quiet fan on bad duct is just a quiet fan that doesn't work.
