Outlet Replacement & Repair
Dead, loose, or scorched outlets diagnosed and replaced — including the upstream faults that killed them.
Services
Outlets and switches are the electrical work everyone's tempted to DIY and shouldn't guess at. A plug that won't grip, an outlet that's stopped working, a switch that crackles — each is a small job with a real wrong way to do it. This was the number two item on my own most-requested list for a reason.
The approach
The outlet problems worth taking seriously announce themselves quietly. A plug that falls out of an outlet means the contacts inside have lost their spring — and loose contacts arc, and arcing makes heat. A switch plate that's warm, an outlet with any brown discoloration, a crackle when something's plugged in: these are the small signs that a ten-dollar device is overdue. Replacing worn devices is cheap fire prevention, and I'd rather do ten of them than have you ignore one.
GFCI protection is the highest-value upgrade in this category, because the metro's older housing stock mostly predates the requirements. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry, and outdoor outlets all want ground-fault protection by modern standards, and plenty of pre-1990 houses have none of it. Adding it is straightforward — a GFCI device protects everything downstream of it, so a few well-placed devices often cover the whole requirement. It's the difference between a tingle and a tragedy around water.
Where this page goes further than most handymen: if the room needs an outlet where there's never been one, or the switch you want needs a wire that doesn't exist — a three-way at the other end of the hall, a switched exterior outlet for holiday lights — running that is in scope. I'm a licensed contractor, so the job doesn't stop at swapping devices in existing boxes. Tell me what you want the room to do, not just which part looks broken.
