Smoke & CO Detector Installation & Replacement in Lakewood, CO

This is the cheapest life-safety work a house can get, and it's routinely years overdue — detectors expire, placement rules have changed, and half the metro's alarms are older than the kids sleeping under them. An hour of work brings the whole house current.

The approach

How I handle smoke & co detector installation & replacement.

Detectors have expiration dates, and almost nobody checks them. The sensors inside degrade whether or not the test button still beeps — smoke alarms are done at ten years, CO detectors typically at five to seven, and the manufacture date is printed on the back of every unit. When I do a detector visit I date every alarm in the house, because a house with one new detector and four expired ones has mostly bought reassurance. Replacing the fleet at once also syncs the next replacement into one easy date.

Colorado takes carbon monoxide seriously and requires detection near sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages — which is nearly every house in the metro, given our gas furnaces and water heaters. Winter is the season that matters: closed windows, furnace running full time, and cars warming in garages. CO placement follows different rules than smoke placement, combo units cover both when placed thoughtfully, and getting that layout right is the actual value of having someone do this deliberately.

Hardwired systems earn their keep and confuse their owners. Interconnected alarms — trip one, they all sound — are a genuine upgrade, standard in newer construction, and they're why one dying unit chirps the whole house at 3am. Replacements have to match the system's wiring and interconnect protocol, and mixing incompatible brands breaks the chain silently. Where a house has no hardwired system, modern wireless-interconnect units deliver the same all-sound-together protection without opening walls — and as a licensed contractor, adding hardwired runs is on the table too.

What’s included

Every smoke & co detector installation & replacement project includes:

  • Hardwired and interconnected systems replaced and kept talking to each other
  • Carbon monoxide coverage brought up to Colorado's requirements
  • Placement corrected to current code — bedrooms, hallways, and every level
