Brick & Stone Repair in Lakewood, CO

Masonry fails slowly and honestly: mortar joints powder out decades before brick does, freeze-thaw pries at whatever water reaches, and one loose wall cap invites the winter in. Repointing and localized repair, done with mortar that matches the original in both color and character, buys old masonry decades.

The approach

How I handle brick & stone repair.

Repointing is the core of masonry maintenance and the front range schedules it with freeze-thaw. Water gets into soft joints, freezes, and wedges — thirty-plus cycles a winter — so mortar that's powdering or receding is an active leak into the wall, not a cosmetic note. Done right, joints get raked out to sound depth and repacked; done wrong, a skim of new mortar over failed joints peels off within a couple of winters. The depth is the job.

Mortar matching is where masonry repair earns respect, and the hardness matters more than the color. Older brick — and the metro has plenty of early-1900s and mid-century masonry — was laid in softer lime-rich mortar, and repointing it with modern hard mortar backfires: the new joints outmuscle the old brick, and the brick faces spall off instead of the mortar sacrificing itself as designed. Matching the original's character, then its color and joint profile, is why a good repair disappears and a bad one is forever gray-striped.

Individual brick replacement and stone resetting round out the trade. A spalled brick — face popped off from trapped moisture — gets cut out and replaced without disturbing its neighbors; near-matches come from salvage when the original run is extinct. Loose wall caps and rocking steps are mostly failed bedding mortar, reset cleanly. And cracks get honest triage: stair-stepping through joints from weathering is repairable maintenance; cracking that runs through the bricks themselves, or widens seasonally, is the foundation talking, and I'll say so rather than mortaring over the message.

What’s included

Every brick & stone repair project includes:

  • Failing joints raked to sound depth and repointed — not smeared over
  • Mortar matched to the original in color, texture, and hardness
  • Spalled and cracked brick cut out and replaced individually
  • Loose stone, wall caps, and steps reset so they stop rocking
  • Planters, garden walls, and chimneys' reachable brickwork repaired
  • A straight answer when cracking means movement rather than weathering
